Telangana doctors are against the move to raise the retirement age of medical colleges from 65 to 70 years

Medical associations in Telangana have opposed reports of a proposal to raise the retirement age of teachers in the state’s medical colleges from 65 to 70, saying such a move would adversely affect promotions, recruitment and career opportunities for junior doctors.

Telangana Junior Doctors Association (T-JUDA), Telangana Senior Doctors Association (T-SRDA) and Health Reforms Doctors Association (HRDA) issued separate statements on Saturday, June 20, urging the state government to maintain the existing retirement age.

Acknowledging the experience and contribution of senior professors, the associations said that extending tenure by another five years would delay promotions for assistant professors, associate professors and professors, leading to stagnant academic careers. “Vacancies created through superannuation are essential to maintain a healthy academic hierarchy and ensure timely career progression,” they said.

They added that thousands of senior residents and newly qualified professionals aspire to become teachers in state medical schools, and any increase in the retirement age would limit recruitment opportunities and create uncertainty about academic careers. Delayed retirements would limit leadership opportunities for mid-career teachers and affect institutional dynamics and succession planning.

The associations urged the government to fill existing faculty vacancies, create additional posts in newly established medical colleges, ensure timely promotions and provide transparent recruitment opportunities for young specialists and seniors.
