Telangana CM, Irrigation Minister seeks water from Karnataka to save crops in Palamur

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy have asked the Karnataka government to release water from the Upper Krishna river system to help save the standing crops under pressure in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district.

Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that Telangana has taken up the matter with Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar keeping in view the difficult water situation in the Krishna basin and the urgent demand of farmers dependent on the Jurala irrigation system.

He said Karnataka has been asked to consider releasing water from the Narayanpur reservoir so that additional inflows can reach the Jurala project and provide relief to farmers whose crops were under stress.

“We explained the situation and asked them to release some water. They said they would check the availability and get back to us,” he said.

The Irrigation Minister pointed out that the current situation requires careful management of the limited water available in the reservoirs. Any releases for irrigation, he said, had to be calibrated against the need to maintain drinking water security if the drought continued.

The minister said the current crisis has also highlighted the importance of creating adequate storage infrastructure in the upper reaches of the Krishna in Telangana.
