The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation on Friday announced its move towards green mobility by retrofitting its aging diesel fleet with electric buses.
On September 15, 2025, the state transport enterprise announced a tender for the retrofitting of old diesel buses to electric buses. As a next step, the company will entrust the conversion of 200 buses to Sai Green Mobility and another 40 buses to Kalyani Power Train Limited.
According to TGSRTC, a target has been set to introduce 2,800 electric buses within Hyderabad Outer Ring limits by 2027. Officials said they expect an increased reliance on public transportation. This would lead to a reduction in pollution levels.
Currently, as many as 325 electric buses are in operation from six depots across Hyderabad. Another 175 buses will be added to the fleet this year. Charging infrastructure is being built in another 19 depots and plans are being drawn up for 10 new depots and 10 charging centers. The cost of this infrastructure is estimated to be about ₹392 crore.
Officials also pointed to a pilot project in Musheerabad as proof of the viability of retrofitting. In 2023, a diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot was converted into an electric bus with the help of the private sector and is now successfully operating within the limits of the Uppal depot.
TGSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director V. Nagi Reddy appealed to citizens to support what he described as a green road for the future of Hyderabad. He called for public participation in the reconstruction of urban transport.
TGSRTC leaders and representatives of modernization companies reviewed the progress of the program in a meeting held at Bus Bhavan.
