With the upcoming Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Municipal Corporation polls to be held in a few months, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is targeting the Backward Classes (BC) vote bank. The party has elected leaders – Kimidi Nagarjuna from Kapu community as Vizianagaram parliamentary segment president and Prasadula Lakshmi Varaprasad from Yadava community as party general secretary. The ruling party now hopes to regain its prominent position with the support of Backward Class people.
Mr. Nagarjuna, who is currently serving as the President of the District Cooperative Central Bank, has been given a second term as the President of the TDP’s Vizianagaram Parliamentary Constituency.
However, a surprise came when the party elevated former Vizianagaram city president Lakshmi Varaprasad as general secretary of the parliamentary segment. The move is seen as a significant political development as municipal corporation elections are due to be held soon. Mr. Varaprasad’s family’s long-standing loyalty to Goa Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and MLA P. Aditi Vijaya Lakshmi is believed to be key to his elevation. Moreover, his parents — father Prasadula Ramakrishna and mother Prasadula Kanakamaha Lakshmi — held the post of chairman of the civic body for nearly 15 years.
It may be recalled that the TDP won only one division out of 50 divisions in the 2019 municipal elections. The party hopes that the elevation of leaders from the BC community will restore its dominance.
