The Telugu Desam Party on Sunday issued a show-cause notice for Eluru Putta MP Mahesh Kumar after allegations linking him to an alleged drug-related episode that drew widespread media attention spread. The deputy was invited to submit a written explanation within five days.
In a statement, TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao said the party leadership took serious note of the reports and asked the MPs for a detailed explanation, saying any development that could undermine the party’s public credibility could not be taken lightly. As a precautionary measure, Mr. Mahesh Kumar has been advised to refrain from participating in party activities until the matter is investigated and clarified.
Mr. Srinivasa Rao said failure to provide a satisfactory response within the stipulated time may require further action in accordance with the party’s organizational rules and disciplinary framework.
Reiterating the party’s stand, he said the TDP maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal activities, including those related to narcotics. The leadership, he added, is committed to ensuring that the behavior of individuals does not cast a shadow on the party’s institutional reputation or the values it claims to stand for.
The party’s standing in public life cannot be compromised by the personal failings or vulnerabilities of individuals, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said, adding that the organization remains committed to maintaining its integrity and public trust.
The TDP leadership will take a final decision after examining the explanation given by the MP and the findings of the party’s internal review, he added.
