
Heavy rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Ditwah prepares to make landfall on November 30. The Tamil Nadu Education Department has declared a holiday for all schools and educational institutions across the state on Saturday.
Even Pondicherry Central University has postponed all examinations scheduled for November 29 amid the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) red warning for heavy rains.
An education ministry circular said: “Meteorological department has said that there will be heavy rain in coastal areas and adjoining areas on Saturday (today). Therefore, all schools in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Saturday (today). No special classes should be held in schools.”
A notification from Pondicherry Central University said: “In accordance with the communication received from the Coast Guard Area, Puducherry and further to the Advisory Circular dated November 27, it is hereby announced that all classes and examinations scheduled for November 29 will be postponed. The revised schedule of the postponed examinations will be notified in due course.”
In particular, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu are on IMD red alert today due to heavy rains. Waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas and streets and roads were flooded due to heavy downpour from the cyclonic storm.
A number of Tamil Nadu districts are on IMD orange alert today, including Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Ranipet. Besides, Karaikal region is also under IMD orange alert.
