The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly constituencies by a wide margin after the votes were counted on Friday (October 9, 2026).

In Madurantakam, at the end of the last round of counting, TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel secured 74,048 votes, defeating DMK’s I Paranthamen who got 54,008 votes. S. Kanitha Sampath of AIADMK was in third place with 47,450 votes.

In Dharapuram, TVK’s P. Sathyabama won with 66,841 votes; DMK’s S. Suganya got 57,370 votes and AIADMK’s K. Banumathi got 45,280 votes.

The polls in the two constituencies were necessitated after Ms. Kumaravel and Ms. Sathyabama, who won the Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats as AIADMK candidates in the 2026 Assembly elections, resigned as MLAs and joined the ruling TVK. Election polls held after the TVK came to power in May were seen as a test of the party’s popularity as the opposition AIADMK sought to win back seats.
