Colachel constituency plays a significant role in the political landscape of Kanniyakumari district due to its sizeable population of fishermen and other small scale labourers.
Colachel, one of the municipalities inhabited mainly by fishing population, has a great cultural and historical heritage. It is widely known for the “Battle of Colachel” fought between the Kingdom of Travancore and the Dutch East India Company. It should be noted that this is the first Asian victory over a European force.
