Candidates of major political parties submitted their papers to the returning officers here on April 6, 2026 (Monday), on the last day for filing nominations for the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

M. Yuvaraja of Maanila Tamil Congress, who is contesting the lotus symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Erode (West Assembly) constituency, filed his nomination with Erode Revenue Divisional Officer N. Sindhuja, who is the returning officer for the constituency.

Gopinath Palaniyappan of the Indian National Congress filed his nomination papers before Arpit Jain, Corporation Commissioner and Returning Officer for the Erode (East Assembly) constituency. Despite opposition from party officials regarding his candidacy, he proceeded to submit the documents. R. Manoharan of AIADMK also filed his nomination for the contest from the constituency. All the candidates were accompanied by leaders and cadres of their respective alliance parties.
Heavy traffic jams were witnessed on Meenakshi Sundaranar Road, which houses the offices of the returning officers, as a large number of candidates and their supporters thronged the area. Vehicles were diverted via the EVN road during the afternoon.
Supporters of Maanila Tamil Congress, DMK and AIADMK candidates gathered in large numbers to the accompaniment of drumming, adding to the congestion.
Similarly, Communist Party of India’s PL Sundaram, who contested from Bhavanisagar Assembly constituency, also filed his nomination petition with the Returning Officer.
