Saving the Bhavani river, which has been polluted and turned dry sand along considerable stretches towards Sirumugai, is at the top of voters’ demands as the largely agrarian landscape in Mettupalayam constituency faces assembly elections.
Originating in the Nilgiris and flowing 216 km through four districts, the river has over 20 combined drinking water systems linked between Pillur and Lower Bhavani (Bhavanisagar reservoir). It has almost dried up and water has stagnated in small pits between Mettupalayam town and Sirumugai since the first week of March in the ongoing summer.
