Hundreds of cars, trucks and buses pass the silent Rajiv Gandhi memorial in Sriperumbudur. Thirty-five years ago, this picturesque city was introduced to the world by the assassination of a former prime minister. However, over the past three decades, the city has grown and begun to wear a new identity, earning the title “Detroit of Asia”.
This industrial hub is one of the key drivers of Tamil Nadu’s economic engine. However, there is a fairly significant mismatch between rapid industrialization and infrastructure development. From traffic jams, inadequate public transport, lack of access to basic amenities and pollution, there are too many infrastructure gaps.
