The Tamil government officially announced a larger sanctuary of the flamingos in Dhanushkod in the Ramanathapuram district.
The Chief Minister of MK Stalin started the sanctuary through video conferencing on the occasion of the world event Day Environment Action organized by the Environmental Department, Climate Change and Forest Changes in Chennai on Thursday, June 5, 2025). Thanghangam Thangas, who participated in other charges such as Minister for the Environment, RS Rajakananapan, Minister for Forests and Supriya Sahu, another main secretary of the Department of the Environment, Climate Change and Forest, participated.

The aim of this step is to maintain a critical stop point along the Flyway Central Asian for thousands of migration wetland birds.
The sanctuary covers 524.7 hectares and includes revenue and forest land in RAMESHWARAM TALUK. The designated area that is part of the environmentally sensitive Mannar Biosphere Reserve Gulf is home to various ecosystems, including mangroves, sand dunes, mud and marshes. These unique features support rich biodiversity, from migratory birds and sea life to nesting sea turtles.
The Government Order (GO) issued on June 4, 2025 Mrs. Sah, noted that, according to a recent poll of wetland birds, 2023-2024 recorded the area of Dhanushkodi over 10,700 wetland birds, representing 128 species including herons, Egret, sandstones, and both larger and smaller Flamingos.

Mangrove species, such as Avicennia and Rhizophora, are dominated by Dhanushkodi lagoon and provide basic breeding and natural defense against coastal erosion. The shrine status is expected to support responsible ecotourism, generate local employment and raise public awareness of the protection of wetlands, GO said.
