All India Congress Committee in-charge of Tamil Nadu, Nivedith Alva, met leaders of front organizations and other departments of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee at Sathyamurthy Bhavan on Wednesday.
Sources in the TNCC said several of them, including SC department head Ranjan Kumar, Hazeena Syed, Tamil Nadu Mahila Congress president and others, expressed that it was time for the party to look beyond those who were given repeated opportunities in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
“It was mostly an opportunity to meet him one-on-one. I explained to Mr. Alva about the work I have done in the last 30 years. I expressed my concern about the need to focus on recapturing the OBC and Dalit votes and the need to cultivate leadership in the second line. We need to give opportunities to newcomers instead of old people who get opportunities repeatedly,” the source said.
Besides, a senior leader said efforts are being made to appoint district presidents across Tamil Nadu without the familiar “quota system”.
“Tamil Nadu Congress leaders, including the TNCC president, will have almost no say on who will be named district congress committee president as another committee has taken over the job, which will recommend a panel of names. The Congress high command will take the final call,” he said.
Anand Srinivasan, chairman of the Tamil Nadu media and communications department, who also met Mr. Alva, said, “We have launched a national talent hunt and have already received applications from 250 people.”
The party also organized a seminar on ‘Save the Constitution’ at Sathyamurthy Bhavan on Wednesday to celebrate Constitution Day.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said, “Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar said that the Constitution has the power to withstand adversity, but those who use it must be fair. Articles 200 and 201 deal with the relationship between the State and the Centre. Baba Saheb Dr. Ambedkar clarified that…if the State Government approves and approves a law, it is a law… Governor, the Governor cannot reject it but only ask for an explanation. Yet we have seen laws passed in the assembly like the request for NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu, which the governor did not give his assent to.
