India have played New Zealand three times in the T20 World Cupand they have a horrendous losing record in all three matches. In their winning campaign in 2007, India lost only one game, to the Kiwis – by 10 runs. The second instance came in 2016 and the third in 2021.
The Kiwis are an experienced team who have finished in the top 4 of most of the ICC competitions they have played in. Recently, India and New Zealand faced each other in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final where Rohit Sharma played an amazing innings to help India win the tournament.
New Zealand’s consistent top 4 finish in ICC tournaments shows the quality they have in their side. Add to that the fact that they have come up with some X-factor players this year who have the ability to really hurt the opposition when push comes to shove.
Here are five players India need to watch out for in the T20 World Cup 2026 final.
Matt Henry
The New Zealand fast bowler has been in sensational form in the tournament. With pitches helping somewhat in the tournament, Matt Henry was extremely lethal in power plays.
Henry has the ability to hit the top of the stumps from a good length and this is a ball that could trouble Sanju Samson early.
India need to prepare well for Henry’s opening shot as losing a couple of wickets early could be detrimental in the final.
Find Allen
If Matt Henry is masterful with the ball, Finn Allen is the kind of X-factor that takes New Zealand from good to dangerous in this tournament. When Finn Allen burst onto the scene in 2021, everyone realized that he was extremely talented. However, this never changed in consistency. Allen scored a hundred and eighty-one in the tournament and can turn into a really dangerous batsman on the flat deck as seen in the semi-final against South Africa.
What sets Allen apart is his ability to play high-risk shots all over the ground, making it difficult for opposing captains to plan him.
Mitchell Santner
The New Zealand captain is yet to hit 40 runs in a single match at the T20 World Cup 2026. And that should be enough to tell you what caliber he has. A crafty spinner with an incredible amount of experience in Indian conditions can prove to be a trump card in the final. Santner’s flying mastery makes him dangerous. Just when you think the ball is there to bat, it’s only very late that you realize it has dipped and Santner has caught you by surprise.
Daryl Mitchell
The right-handed batsman has remained quiet in the tournament so he could have a great chance. He hit two fifties and two hundreds in the recent ODI series against India, which speaks volumes about how well he knows the Indian bowling attack. If Mitchell is not kept in check, he could be a dangerous customer in the summit clash.
Glen Phillips
The last name on the list is Glenn Phillips – and not because he can bat well or bowl well, but because he can change the impact of a game with his fielding. A sharp catch at point or a few boundaries saved in the field can change the face of the game. Good fielding in big matches can also lift the morale of the team, which in turn translates into better performances from the side.
All in all, New Zealand have what it takes to give India a run for their money in the T20 World Cup 2026 final.
