After their almighty scare against Nepal, England have decided to bolster their batting depth for the clash with the West Indies on Wednesday 11 February. The two-time champions have brought in all-rounder Jamie Overton for the Mumbai contest at the Wankhede Stadium, replacing Luke Wood.
England had to work hard to win against Nepalwho almost pulled off a sensational chase at Eden Gardens on Sunday 8 February. Had it not been for fifties from Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook followed by a late cameo from Will Jacks, England would have slumped to a loss against an upstart Asian side.
Luke Wood conceded 31 runs in three overs against Nepal but held his nerve in the 19th over to help seal victory.
“England have named their XI for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup group match against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday (13:30 GMT). Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton comes in for Lancashire seamer Luke Wood,” the ECB said in a statement.
Overton played all three matches against Sri Lanka during the recent pre-tournament T20I series but failed to make a major impact in all three games. The all-rounder has played 18 T20Is, picking up 17 wickets at an average of 19.23. England will look to Jofra Archer to start after an indifferent opening match.
With the bat, he scored just 56 runs at an average of 8. England will be hoping to build on the momentum against a West Indies side that beat Scotland smartly. West Indies started the tournament with a 35-run win against the Scottish side.
