T20 World Cup: After Iceland, Uganda is set to replace Pakistan in the tournament

January 30, 2026

The banter surrounding Pakistan’s potential withdrawal from the T20 World Cup continues. After Iceland, Uganda has now offered to replace the team at the global tournament. The team’s official account took to X on Thursday, January 29 to joke about their interest in the tournament.

“If a T20 World Cup seat opens, Uganda is ready – wrapped and padded. Passports warm (not icy). No bakers leaving the ovens or ships turning to U. Heat, noise, pressure? We’ll bring a brave kit,” wrote the Ugandan cricketer on X.

Pakistan is reportedly considering its stance on the T20 World Cup to show solidarity with Bangladesh, which has boycotted the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh were denied a request to change the venue from India to Sri Lanka, forcing them to withdraw from the 2026 edition of the competition.

Uganda is not the first team to troll Pakistan for threatening to pull out of the World Cup. Earlier, another X account named Iceland cricket had joked that they were ready to replace Pakistan in the competition, but only if they were told in advance.

Iceland Cricket’s tweet received over half a million impressions and set off a chain reaction. The banter continued as the bill raised airfares to Colombo and hoped for a reaction from the ICC.

The joke continued when Iceland also pulled out of the T20 World Cup, stating that none of their players were playing full-time cricket and needed to focus on their current jobs.

“Our players come from all walks of life and cannot simply leave their professions and fly halfway around the world to experience the temperatures commonly found in Finnish saunas. Our captain, a professional baker, has to tend his oven, the captain of the ship has to steer his vessel and our bankers have to go broke (again). This is the harsh reality of cricket at the amateur level of the game,” the account said.

“Our loss is probably Uganda’s gain. We wish them well. Their kits can’t be missed unless you have epilepsy, in which case they’re probably best avoided. The future is always ice until it’s not,” it added.

The T20 World Cup begins on February 7 and for the first time in the competition’s history, Bangladesh will not be participating. The team withdrew from the tournament after the International Cricket Council refused to change the venue of the team from India to Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh has raised security concerns about traveling to India following the Mustafixur Rahman incident. However, the ICC rejected their request, saying the level of threat was not high enough to change the venue.
