During his visit to Moscow on Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said he wanted to “redefine” relations with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted him in Moscow at their first meeting, because the key Kremlin Ally Bashar Al-Assad was expelled last year.
According to the AFP press agency, the Syrian leader is expected to push Assad, who, after overthrowing, fled to Moscow.
Both leaders are expected to discuss the status of Russian valuable military foundations in the country – the naval base in Tartus and the air base in HMEimi – whose fate has been uncertain since the takeover of the rebels.
In the notes at the beginning of the Sharaa meeting, she acknowledged the historical ties of both countries, but said he wanted to recalibrate because he brought Damascus back to the world scene.
“We are trying to restore and redefine the nature of these relationships in a new way, so there is independence for Syria, sovereign Syria, as well as its territorial unity and integrity and its security stability,” Sharaa told Putin.
The Russian leader welcomed “special relations” between two countries that “have developed among our countries for many decades”.
So far, Assad has not mentioned or Russian bases, the main points of gluing in the relationship.

The official who asked for anonymity was not allowed to inform the media, AFP said “Sharaa asks the Russian President to give all the individuals who committed war crimes and are in Russia, especially Bašar Al-Assad.”
The long -term ruler, who was overthrown in December, was looking for refuge in Moscow.
Russia was a key ally of Assad during the bloody 14 -year Syrian Civil War and provided major military support that maintained his power in power.
After giving him diplomatic support in the UN Security Council, he militarily affected Assad support in 2015 by heavy air bombing in rebel areas.
Last December, however, was expelled from power in the offensive led by the Islamist forces of Sharaa and fleeing to Russia, which in the last 10 months protected him and his family.
Despite this, the new Islamic rulers of Syria were looking for peaceful relations with Russia.
The uncertainty was covered by the fate of the Russian naval base in Tartus and its air base at HMEimi by Assad’s release.
