Hours after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma denied Congress allegations regarding his wife allegedly holding multiple passports and assets abroad, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday (April 6, 2026) challenged the BJP leader to deny the Bhagavad Gita claims under oath.
Speaking to reporters after an election rally in Raha, the Assam Congress president questioned Mr. Sarma and asked if he was hiding assets and business interests abroad while spreading “falsehoods” about political rivals.
A day after Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Mr Gogoi sought to find out whether Mr Sarma’s wife holds three foreign passports, owns property in Dubai, has companies in the US or has placed assets in shell companies, the chief minister on Monday (April 6) morning alleged that the opposition party had fabricated the allegations using false information from a Pakistani social media group.
“I said it yesterday and I say it again now – I can say on oath on Bhagavad Gita that I have no property in London as claimed by Mr. Sarma. Can he do that? I urge him to come to the common ground and do the same on oath on Bhagavad Gita,” Mr. Gogoi said.
He argued that if such qualities were not declared in the election affidavit, Sarma could not now accept their existence as it would lead to cancellation of his candidature.
“The questions are simple – does your wife have a golden visa to Dubai? Do you or any family member own property there? Is the golden visa in the Indian passport? Is any member of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family doing business in a foreign country? Did Himanta Biswa Sarma disclose his family’s wealth and assets abroad in his election manifesto? Mr. Sarma should not welcome anything to hide the investigation if he has not. Gogo.
He claimed that if the Congress comes to power in Assam, it will continue to investigate Mr. Sarma’s alleged undisclosed foreign holdings and business operations.
“Legal action will be taken against all illegal properties, businesses and networks associated with him,” the Congress deputy leader said in the Lok Sabha.
At a morning press conference in Guwahati, Mr. Sarma said the allegations were leveled to influence the poll results, which is “criminal under law”.
He also claimed that the documents used by Congress to impeach his wife came from the social media group “Pakistanis in Ajman” and her photo was morphed into a lost passport of a person from that country.
The chief minister said his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma has lodged a police complaint against Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera against the allegations.
Mr Khera claimed on Sunday (April 5) that Sarma’s wife has three passports of the UAE, Egypt and Antigua-Barbuda, two properties in Dubai and assets in shell companies in the US.
