(Bloomberg) -Swarthmore College said he called the police to break the pro-Palestinian protest camp on his land after the federal enforcement of the right to end the demonstration.
Police arrested nine people on Saturday, including one of the students of the Private School of Liberal Arts and a former student, President Swarthmore Val Smith said in his statement.
“In addition to the risk of threat to the community, the promotion of social media protests attracted attention agencies in criminal proceedings, including the FBI that urged us to end the camp as quickly as possible,” Smith said.
It is the latest campus incident that could control control from President Donald Trump administration, which froze or threaten federal financing of universities, including Harvard, Columbia and Cornell, that he considered anti -Semitism and other policies to disagree. This week Trump raised pressure by threatening to get rid of Harvard University about his tax exempt.
In Swarthmore, a 161-year-old institution in the suburbs of Philadelphia, the camp was organized by the Pro-Palestinian student group, which was suspended by a college and also attracted external protesters, Smith said.
She said that her decision to call the police, which she called “terribly difficult”, was necessary to ensure security on academic ground.
Police Swarthmore Borough and Sheriff’s Office in the District of Delaware did not respond to requests for comment.
Two federal grants have been reduced to Swarthmore, which is much less dependent on federal financing than on large research universities, reported the Campus newspaper at the University of April. According to the report, federal financing is a small fraction of the Swarthmore operating budget of $ 220 million to $ 2024-25.
