Pune-based wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Energy said on Monday (Jun 15) that it has installed S175 (5MW), claimed to be India’s tallest wind turbine plant, at 160m, in Vijayanagar district, Karnataka.
As India’s most powerful turbine to date, the S175 was designed based on more than 30 years of operational knowledge from Suzlon’s existing 15.5 GW turbine fleet, according to a company statement. As the country’s first FDRE (Fixed and Dispatched Renewable Energy) ready turbine, it unlocks new wind frontiers and will enable wind power to play a bigger role in India’s energy transformation.
Pralhad Joshi, Union Cabinet Minister for New and Renewable Energy, said: “The commissioning of the S175 5 MW turbine will go a long way in ensuring that we meet our wind energy ambitions, both domestically and globally. This next-generation turbine reflects India’s growing strength in advanced clean energy innovation.”
“Its biggest breakthrough lies not only in significantly increasing power generation, but also in its ability to make previously unviable wind farms viable, thereby expanding wind’s addressable markets,” said Girish Tanti, executive vice-chairman, Suzlon Group.
The integration of proven reliability and next-generation turbine technology would help it deliver higher power generation and improved project economics for low to medium wind regimes in India, the company said.
