West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday (May 24, 2026) said that along with ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (support of all, progress of all) will be ‘Sabka Hisab’ (holding everyone accountable).
While the slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” was coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is often used by BJP rank-and-file, the phrase “Sabka Hisab” is aimed at political opponents, especially the Trinamool Congress leadership, which has been in power in the state for the past 15 years.
In a speech in Nandigram, the chief minister advised party workers to exercise restraint and not break the law. “If you wish, you could dismantle every single brick from the houses of the goons. Still, don’t take the law into your hands. The only place that awaits all of them (Trinamool leaders) is jail. I will not spare a single criminal. All will be held accountable,” Mr Adhikari said at a public meeting.
The Chief Minister was elected from Nandigram but had to resign after deciding to retain the seat of Bhabanipur in Kolkata.
Pointing out that false cases were registered against 4,000 party workers in Nandigram, Mr. Adhikari further referred to the names of some BJP supporters who were targeted by the previous regime.
The Chief Minister said that it will be available to the people of Nandigram in future as well. “I will fulfill every promise I made during the election campaign. You will find me exactly as you have known me since 2003,” he said.
Mamata breaks the silence
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke her silence and raised questions about the conduct of the parliamentary polls, which her party lost.
“Was it really an election or just a mockery in the name of democracy? Almost one million names were removed due to logical inconsistencies. There was tampering at the counting centres. BJP workers allegedly entered in uniforms of central forces. Identity cards of our agents were stolen,” she alleged.
She urged the state administration to act fairly. “I am not against the administration, but you are the guardians of the law. If you break the law, you will be subject to its jurisdiction. I will also see if the constitution is bigger than the barrel of the gun,” she said.
The Trinamool Congress president said she had “built” institutions but the new government was “destroying” them. “People did not get Lakshmir Bhandar benefits. DA promises were made in the budget. Pay commission implementation was promised and approved by the government. Old promises are being repackaged now,” she said.
Ms. Banerjee vowed to continue her fight against the BJP government. “We will fight against this bulldozing policy. I had the shopkeepers rehabilitated. They are now being forcibly deprived of their livelihood,” she said.
