An SUV was gutted and its occupants had a narrow escape after it rammed into a milk tanker on the Bengaluru-Mysuru controlled access highway near Sangabasavanadoddi in Bengaluru South district on Sunday morning.
The accident caused a massive traffic jam on the busy corridor.
According to police, a vehicle carrying a family of three to Bengaluru tried to overtake a tanker from the left and rammed into it.
The impact started a fire in the engine and within minutes the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
All three passengers managed to jump out in time and escaped with minor injuries.
Passersby and highway patrol personnel rushed them to a nearby private hospital.
The burning car stopped traffic for several kilometers.
Fire and rescue personnel extinguished the fire and cleared the charred vehicle before traffic resumed around 5:30 p.m., police said.
Preliminary reports indicate that speeding and a risky overtaking attempt were to blame for the accident. The exact cause is being investigated by the Bengaluru South District Traffic Police.
