Even as a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the collapse of a dam across the Manair river at Gumpula village in Peddapalli district, the demand for reconstruction of the damaged structure has gathered pace to protect the interests of local farmers.
The check dam was constructed in 2022 at an estimated cost of ₹19 crore for the benefit of the farmers of Gumpul and adjoining villages. Three days ago, he suddenly collapsed, raising suspicions among the villagers about “sabotage” by the sand mafia. A section of local farmers raised doubts as to how the structure, which withstood the heavy flow of water in the river during the recent monsoon season, could have collapsed just three years after its construction.
This led the authorities to order a detailed investigation into the incident. According to sources, a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the dam collapse. A joint team of police and irrigation department officials have already inspected the spot and started a thorough investigation.
