Assam Police shot dead a suspected member of an armed group in an encounter in Assam’s Dima Hasao district late on Monday (December 1, 2025) night.
A district police officer said the incident took place around 11:00 pm near Chillei village under Mahur police station after armed members of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) or HPC(D) intercepted a vehicle, fired two shots in the air and threatened the driver.
“The armed men fired at the personnel from the nearby camp of the Assam Police Command Battalion, who rushed to the spot after hearing the gunshots. One of the suspected militants was killed in the retaliatory reaction,” said the officer, requesting anonymity.
The body of the man, identified as Modi Hmar of the district’s Jinam Valley, has been sent for post-mortem to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in south Assam. “He is suspected to be a member of the HPC(D),” said an officer.
The HPC(D) was formed in 1995 as an offshoot of the HPC, which was formed in 1986 as a political party spearheading the movement for self-rule in the part of Mizoram bordering Assam and Manipur. The HPC gravitated towards armed revolution until the signing of the peace pact in July 1994.
Operating primarily in Mizoram, the HPC(D) uses the Bhuban range in southern Assam’s Cachar district and the Jinam Valley area in Dima Hasao district as bases for planning and conducting its operations.
