Susie Wiles, US President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, offered a candid look at the president’s personality and leadership style in a series of interviews. Wiles, described the president as intense, ambitious and highly self-confident, offering an honest look at his behavior behind the scenes.
Wiles made a striking observation about Trump’s behavior, comparing it to the traits of high-functioning alcoholics despite his abstinence: “Trump has the personality of an alcoholic,” she said.
She added that her perspective comes from personal experience: “High-functioning alcoholics, or alcoholics in general, their personalities are exaggerated when they drink. So I’m kind of an expert on big personalities.”
Trump’s retaliation campaign
Wiles revealed how she is helping manage Trump’s focus on political retribution, especially after his 2020 election defeat.
At the start of his administration, she said, “We have a loose agreement that the score-settling will end before the first 90 days are over.”
She later clarified the intent behind his action: “I don’t think he’s on a retribution tour… people who have done bad things have to leave the government. In some cases, it might look like retribution. And there might be an element of that at times. Who would blame him? Not me.”
Of the prosecution by New York Attorney General Letitia James, she admitted, “Well, that might be the only payback.”
Venezuela and military strikes
Wiles also provided insight into Trump’s approach in Venezuela.
She said the president wants to continue military action against drug boats: “He wants to keep blowing up the boats until Maduro cries uncle. And people a lot smarter than me say he will.”
She emphasized the precision of the strikes: “The administration is very confident that we know who we’re going to blow up.”
Wiles’ comments hinted at motives for regime change, which contrasts with the administration’s public stance of attacking drug trafficking and protecting American lives.
Trump behind the scenes
Wiles described Trump as: “An intense personality who thinks in broad strokes but is often unconcerned with the details of process and policy.
She noted that while Trump can be ruthless with his political enemies, he is not as angry or hot-tempered as he is often portrayed: “He was not as angry or hot-tempered as is often suggested,” Wiles said.
Boundless trust
Wiles emphasized Trump’s self-confidence and belief in his own abilities, describing a remarkable sense of limitless ability: “He has the mindset that there’s nothing he can’t do. Nothing, zero, nothing.”
Criticism of Attorney General Pam Bondi
Wiles has openly criticized former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for her mishandling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
She said Bondi didn’t understand his audience: “I think she was completely relieved to appreciate that this was exactly the target audience that cared.”
Wiles described Bondi’s distribution of binders to social media influencers as ineffective: “First she gave them binders full of nothingness. And then she said she had a witness list, or a client list, on her desk. There was no client list and it wasn’t the hell on her desk.”
She defended Trump regarding Epstein: “I read the Epstein file and Trump does nothing terrible in it.
