India captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir and ICC chairman Jay Shah took the T20 World Cup trophy to the Hanuman Tekri Temple in Ahmedabad just hours after the team’s victory against New Zealand.
India defeated New Zealand by a huge margin of 96 runs to successfully defend the T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 8. In turn, India became the first host nation to win the tournament and defend their title at the same time.
After the broadcast and press formalities were completed, the selected members of the Indian team went to the Hanuman Temple adjacent to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to seek blessings.
On Sunday, India produced a commanding performance against New Zealand in the highlight of the tournament. Sent in to bat first, India put up a mammoth total of 255 runs which they later successfully defended by 96 runs. A blistering spell from Jasprit Bumrah saw the Indian team defeat New Zealand in the final of the competition by just 159 runs.
The victory marked India’s third consecutive ICC title from 2024-2026, making the team one of the most successful international teams in the game of cricket during this period.
