Only 57% of composting plants at the community level are currently functional in the state, according to a survey at the level of the field initiated by the Ministry of Local Self -government to assess the extent of the use of equipment for the management of biodegradable waste.
The remaining 43% of systems that included aerobic composting (the “Thumboormuormuzhi”) and Vermicomposting units faced challenges such as insufficient support and maintenance support. Only 605 devices at the level of community from the total number of 1, 062 are functional since June 2025.
According to a report on solid and liquid waste scenario in the State submitted by the Ministry of Local Self -Government in front of the main bench of the National Green Tribunal 23.
Only 84 out of 188 biogas plants are functional. The total number of other systems and operating are units for composting aerobic basket (822-482), composting units of WindrowoW (28-24), Vermicompost units (18-10), fly-free units (2-2) and organic waste converters (4-3). The survey found that 86% of household equipment at the source for biodegradable waste management has been functional since June 2025. For the remaining L4%, the main identified challenge was an insufficient inoculus supply. At the state level, six inoculus agencies have been emphasized to achieve the effective use of the domestic detention systems.
In addition, the system was established through volunteers and private agencies Harith Karma Sena to ensure regular supplies of high -quality inoculus. According to the report, up to 5,027 Harith Karma members are trained as green techniques who help households to effectively maintain equipment at the source level.
