A Geographical Information System (GIS) survey has been initiated to assess the pipelines of Kerala Water Authority (KWA) within Kochi Corporation limits.
The survey, which was carried out by a private firm, is part of the KWA’s water distribution modernization project. A topographical survey has started simultaneously in various departments of the company and will soon be followed by a consumer survey.
“The survey is part of a joint project between KWA and a private firm to optimize water distribution in Kochi. The project is awaiting financial sanction from the state government. The work has started without waiting for sanction so that we don’t waste any time,” a KWA source said.
The aim is to collect data from consumers regarding their water consumption and requirements. “As part of the survey, mapping of the roads, their width and the location of the pipelines is being done. Once that is done, we will take a call on which pipelines need to be preserved and which need to be replaced,” the source added.
The work started a week ago and is being carried out by four teams, with more teams joining soon. The survey is expected to continue for several months. The project, jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank and the state government, involves upgrading the water distribution system and aims to reduce non-revenue water losses.
The agreement between the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and private entity SUEZ was signed in June. In the first year, we will focus on the design and survey of the pipeline, while in the second year, construction activities are planned to begin.
With a private company, KWA follows a design-build-operate-transfer model. The company is responsible for the modernization of the water supply network, including its operation and maintenance, for a period of 10 years.
