Fans of Tamil star Suriya were in for a shock on Thursday (May 14) as the morning, noon and matinee shows of the actor’s much-anticipated film Karuppu were cancelled. From early this morning, fans took to social media to express their disappointment at the show’s last-minute cancellation, with reports citing the financial woes of the film’s production banner, Dream Warrior Pictures, as the cause of the delay in the release.
In an air of uncertainty and disappointment, RJ Balaji, the writer-director who held the project for over two years, apologized to the fans and assured them that the film will be released tonight. An emotional Balaji broke down in a video posted on his Instagram profile, “I’m really sorry to all the fans. This shouldn’t have happened. Many of you would travel a lot so early in the morning to catch the 9 o’clock show of Karuppu. The reason we watch movies is to escape from the problems we have at home and in our lives. But I didn’t expect this kind of activity while watching the movie. I really hope that all these issues will be fixed and the movie will be released tonight.’
“I have proved that Karuppu will release on 14th May and it will be a blockbuster. I am getting emotional but that is the pain. But I hope God will ensure that the film releases tonight. So many people are working to solve these problems… Sir Suriya has given so much. Sorry for all the stress but the film with us will be worth it all.” he added.
Meanwhile, the producers of the film are yet to clarify the reason behind the delay in the film’s release. At the time of publication, most ticketing platforms show only a handful of theaters accepting reservations for evening performances. Along with Balaji, millions of Suriya fans hope that the situation will change and the film will see the light of day soon.
With Trisha as the female lead and Balaji in a pivotal role, Karuppu also stars Indrans, Natty, Swasika, Sshivadha, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy and Deepa, among others. With music composed by Sai Abhyankkar, the film has cinematography by GK Vishnu and editing by R Kalaivanan.
Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, TS Gopi Krishnan and Karan Aravind Kumar wrote Karuppu along with Balaji. SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabu are producing the film under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures.
