
Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Government Medical College of Hospital (MCH), Thiruvananthapuram, the first department set up at the Faculty of Medicine to deal exclusively complex gastrointestinal conditions that require surgical treatment in the country.
A two -day event was organized here at the weekend, including the program of continuing medical education and graduates who meet together to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Department.
The surgical gastroenterology department, founded in 1975 under the leadership of N. Rajan, trained many of the famous and leading GI surgeons of the day, some of which are currently heading for the main training centers in India and abroad.
It cooperates closely with the Ministry of Medical Gastroenterology, founded in 1973, the surgical gastroenterology department has elaborated its way up and soon offered patients surgical treatment of chronic pancreatitis and portal hypertension, in addition to surgical foundations for GI cancer.
22. The National Conference of the Indian Society for Gastroenterology in 1981 was hosted together by medical and surgical gastroenterology departments, which was also an opportunity to present excellent academic and clinical work in this part of the country.
The work carried out by departments grew jumps and borders when more faculty joined the department at the age of 80. The surgical gastroenterology course (MCH) began in 1996 and at that time was one of the few training centers in the country offered by the MCH program.
With the start of the MCH course, the care of the patient and training activities further improved and established the department as a point of recommendations for major surgical problems of GI. The opening of a super special block in 2011 as part of the PMssy project was another main milestone in improving patient care.
The opening of the Multi special block and the expansion of the critical care unit to the most modern facilities in 2018-19 further expanded the field of surgical gastroenterology, which began to manage several patients with critical GI problems. The main open and laparoscopic operations for GI cancer, pre -accancer conditions and chronic diseases are now being carried out daily.
It also began to carry out liver transplantation in the public and private sector partnership regime with the support of the Kimshealth transplant team and other sister specialties.
The department also brought 25 publications in indexed magazines and currently conducts a randomized controlled study in pancreatic surgery, in addition to basic research of genetics and colon cancer.
