Following reports of negligence on the part of hospital staff in the death of an infant shortly after delivery at the Haveri District Hospital on Tuesday, the district surgeon’s office clarified that it was a macerated intrauterine death (IUD), i.e. the death of the fetus in the mother’s womb.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the District Surgeon, eight-month pregnant Roopa Girish Karabannavar of Kakol in Ranebennur taluk came to the hospital at 10:34 am on Tuesday with complaints of headache, vomiting and no fetal movement in the womb.
“After finding signs of pre-eclampsia during the examination, the 32-year-old patient was sent to the maternity ward for further treatment. And as she was advised to urinate before taking the vaginal (PV) test in the maternity ward, the pregnant woman proceeded towards the toilet block in the scanning wing when she gave birth in the corridor. The woman was immediately taken to the OT and further treatment in the maternity ward. They found that it was a case of macerated intrauterine body and that was handed over to the woman’s family,” the report said.
District Surgeon PR Havanoor also said that it was a rushed delivery and that an independent investigation has been launched into the case. Further action will be taken based on the investigation report, he said.
After the hospital incident, the State Human Rights Commission registered a suo motu case.
