A political controversy has erupted over the inclusion of Union minister and actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi in the Guruvayur booth in the voters’ list, with District Congress Committee (DCC) president Joseph Tajet accusing him of trivializing the election process.
Mr Tajet alleged that Mr Gopi had “turned the electoral process into child’s play” by frequently changing his electoral identity at different places. He pointed out that according to the recently released voter list, Mr. Gopi’s vote is now registered at Booth No. 137 in Guruvayur.
“He projected himself differently in different contexts – a resident of Puducherry buying a car, a native of Thrissur during the Lok Sabha elections and a voter from Thiruvananthapuram during the local body elections,” Tajet said, criticizing what he described as inconsistent public positioning.
He further argued that such actions undermine the dignity of democratic institutions and send a wrong message to the young generation.
The DCC president also asked why Mr. Gopi, who reportedly owned a flat in Guruvayur even during the Lok Sabha term, did not register his vote there then and did it in Thrissur instead.
On reports that Mr. Gopi had expressed interest in serving as the chairman of the Guruvayur Devaswom, he said that such positions require more responsibility and consistency.
The DCC president urged the BJP national, state and district leadership to clarify its stand on Mr. Gopi’s voter registration issue in Guruvayur and urged the party to either advise the Union minister to correct himself or publicly explain the circumstances surrounding the change in his voter details.
