Suresh Gopi criticizes the state government for sabotaging central projects in Kerala

February 11, 2026

Union Minister Suresh Gopi has launched a scathing attack on the state government, alleging that it is systematically seeking to derail various central development projects across Kerala. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, he pointed out that the state’s non-cooperative attitude has led to the loss of massive investments, including the ₹600 crore ESI Medical College project in Kollam. Describing the loss as a betrayal of the unorganized sector workers, he termed the project as their version of AIIMS and expressed deep regret over the government’s failure to provide what was already within reach.

The minister expressed disbelief over Health Minister Veena George’s statement that the government came to know about the ESI Medical College issue only in January. He noted that even during his tenure as a nominated member of parliament since 2017, the public often drew attention to him. He accused the state government of being more interested in creating a clamor for things they didn’t get than protecting projects that had already been approved by the Centre.

Regarding the establishment of AIIMS in Kerala, Suresh Gopi reiterated his long-standing preference for Alappuzha, citing its urgent need for development since 2016. However, he warned that if the state did not provide suitable land as per central norms, the project could shift to Thrissur. Emphasizing that the Center requires at least four potential sites that meet specific guidelines, he questioned why previous Kerala ministers in the UPA government failed to pursue such vital health infrastructure during their tenure.

Mr. Gopi also highlighted the revival of the Guruvayur-Tirur railway line, a project originally conceived during E. Ahamed’s time as Union Minister, which was subsequently put on hold. He said the Modi government is now ready to rejuvenate the project. While stressing his commitment to the overall development of Kerala, he maintained a special focus on Thrissur and criticized the state for offering land on long-term lease in Thiruvananthapuram when the Center specifically demanded 10 to 12 acres in centrally located Thrissur for a forensic laboratory.

He further revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to apply for 25 acres of land in Thrissur for the National University of Forensic Sciences soon. He urged the state government to show its sincerity by facilitating the demand instead of hindering it. The minister asserted that AIIMS will eventually become a reality in Kerala, but the state must stop its pattern of avoidance and follow the necessary procedural guidelines to make it happen.
