Seven days after an Unnao rape survivor and her family protested the Delhi High Court’s order granting conditional bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in a rape case, the Supreme Court stayed the order.
Unnao rape survivor Mehmood Pracha’s lawyer said in a media interview that while this should not be considered a victory, it can be considered a “temporary relief”. “She kept asking me if she will be safe after the Delhi High Court order, now at least I can assure her that the Supreme Court has given her temporary relief. The fight will continue,” he said.
The order issued by the Supreme Court on Monday (December 29, 2025) not only gave confidence to the survivors but also lifted the spirits of the protesters. Yogita Bhayan, founder of Pari, who protested alongside the survivors, said the Supreme Court had restored her faith in the judiciary. “We protested when the Congress government was in power and will continue to protest for its safety during the BJP rule. We are grateful that the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the danger of the Delhi High Court order,” she said.
It defies the order of the SC
Meanwhile, Sengar’s daughter, Ishita Sengar, took to social media platform X to write an open letter defying the Supreme Court’s order, calling it a response to public outrage. “If pressure and public frenzy begin to overshadow evidence and due process, what protections does the average citizen really have?” she wrote in the post.
She further wrote that due to the fact that the case is in the public domain, the facts have not been given the proper place. “Please let the law speak without fear. Please let the evidence be examined without coercion. Please let the truth be treated as the truth, even if it is unpopular,” her post read.
