The Supreme Court on Tuesday (April 21, 2026) asked a high-powered committee tasked with streamlining and improving open correctional institutions across the country to widen its scope and formulate a comprehensive plan to make prisons disability-friendly while taking into account safety requirements. The panel is chaired by former Supreme Court judge, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat.
“The rights of prisoners with disabilities must be recognized and exercised in a manner that is consistent with a humane rights-based approach, ensuring that imprisonment does not in any way diminish or abridge the fundamental protections enshrined in Articles 14 (right to equal treatment) and 21 (right to a life of dignity) of the Constitution,” observes Annep.
