Despite reaching the inaugural final of UEFA’s secondary club competition, then known as the UEFA Cup, there was a lingering sense of disappointment within the Tottenham Hotspur squad.
As Spurs forward Martin Chivers recalled: “Our wives were promised an all-expenses-paid trip to the final if we made it. They dreamed of Madrid, Paris, or Rome, but where did we end up? They weren’t thrilled about going to Wolverhampton, that’s for sure.”
The 2024/25 Europa League final could once again be an all-English affair, with Tottenham joined in the quarter-finals by Manchester United. However, the final will be held at Bilbao’s San Mamés. While the families of Premier League players might relish a trip to the Basque Country in May, neither Tottenham nor United are favourites to win the trophy.
