Summer rains wet rice and corn

Unseasonal rain coupled with gusty winds lashed parts of Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Rajanna Sircilla districts on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) night, soaking the paddy and maize produce of many farmers and adding to their woes.

A sudden spell of summer rain dealt a blow to several farmers in Bommakal of Karimnagar rural mandal as their paddy fields stored in a mall were soaked leaving them desperate.

Similar incidents were reported from different parts of the combined Karimnagar district when untimely rains wreaked havoc on farmers who wet their grain stocks almost at the end of the buying season. Devastated farmers sought immediate steps to speed up rice procurement and immediate purchase of rain-soaked rice.

Asbestos sheets on the roof of a kutcha house in Bommakal were blown away under the force of a strong gale. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Bandi Sanjay visited a mall in Bommakal on Wednesday.

He interacted with farmers affected by the summer rains, even as they told him their tale of woe, showing rain-soaked paddies and blaming their plight on “delays” in getting rice.

Later, speaking to the media, Mr. Sanjay claimed that the delay in the purchase of paddy fields has put the farmers in a dire situation. Farmers are bearing the brunt of unseasonal rains and the state government’s incompetence to quickly procure paddy field.

“If the current dispensation is not able to procure paddy from the farmers, the chief minister should write a letter to the Centre,” he said, wondering why the state government is not able to procure paddy quickly when the Center is bearing the entire cost of the rice procurement process.
