Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty recently fell victim to a deepfake that was used to promote an investment scam on her behalf. In a synthetic video that is going viral on social media, Murty can be heard talking about the investment plan and promising big “20-30x” returns.
Taking note of the AI-generated video, Murthy warned those seeking investment advice about “AI and cunning minds” behind deepfakes and suggested that people start thinking and analyzing for themselves before spending their hard-earned money on any scheme.
“I am really concerned about fake news using my face and my voice to promote investments promising 20-30 times returns,” Murty told news agency PTI. “It’s all fake and controlled by artificial intelligence and the cunning mind behind it.
The founder-chairperson of the non-profit charity Infosys Foundation said that she will never and will never talk about investments. “If you see my face or hear my voice promoting investment, don’t believe it.
The MP suggested that people choose their investments wisely, based on their personal analysis and after checking with a trusted source, saying: “It’s hard-earned money – think it through, check with a bank or a trusted source before making a decision.”
In September this year, fraudsters allegedly tried to extract “sensitive information” from Sudha Murthy during a hoax call.
In the police complaint, she said the call was made from a number that appeared as “Telecom Dept” when checked on the Truecaller app.
The caller, posing as an employee of the Department of Telecommunications, claimed that her mobile services would be disconnected due to abuse and allegedly threatened that obscene videos were being sent or made available from her number.
The individual, described as abusive and using a fake identity, tried to get personal information from Murty, according to media reports that cited police sources.
Murty sued the caller for threats and attempts to obtain sensitive data.
