Retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta was on Saturday (May 9, 2026) appointed as adviser to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, according to an announcement.
Mr. Gupta, a 1990 batch officer, was deputed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) as a special observer for the SIR exercise held ahead of the recently concluded assembly elections.

“Mr. Gupta’s extensive experience is expected to help the new administration in policy coordination and governance-related matters,” the official said.
The new BJP government has also appointed IAS officer Shantana Bala as private secretary to the chief minister, according to another announcement.
Mr. Bala, a 2017 batch officer, was the Additional District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas in his last assignment.
“Bala’s appointment is part of the restructuring of the chief minister’s office after the change of government,” another official said.
Both officers have been asked to assume their new duties immediately, according to the announcement.
