Hundreds of students led by AIDSO Maharaj College Action Committee on Thursday staged a demonstration demanding cleaning of college toilets, classrooms, drinking water filters and cancellation of increase in library fees.
Addressing the protesters, AIDSO district secretary Nitin said that school classrooms and toilets must be cleaned daily. Since the drinking water filters have not been cleaned/replaced for a long time, it is necessary to clean them immediately in the interest of the students, he demanded.
Another issue of concern to students is in the Junior and Senior BA Halls where pigeon droppings in classrooms are causing inconvenience to students. “Despite the classrooms having a great history and being held in high esteem, the negligence of the school management in ensuring the cleanliness of these classrooms has caused anxiety among the students,” said Mr. Nitin.
In a statement, AIDSO said that despite the library fee collected on entry, an additional fee is charged on behalf of the library card. This fee increases every year; this year, the library card fee has increased to ₹425, he added.
“Toilets have not been cleaned for months. Newspapers, dailies, monthlies and competing periodicals that were previously available in the college study hall are no longer provided,” it claimed.
They complained that there were only five days left to register for the exam and pay the fees and the online registration portal would not open.
They also complained about other matters to the director. The students demanded the appointment of teachers, the provision of practical equipment for science departments and the repair of ventilators and electrical installations in classrooms.
The director assured them that all cleanliness issues would be resolved within two days and the remaining issues would be resolved within 15 days.
