The All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO) said the University of Mysore (UoM) has reportedly decided to curb student protests on its campuses, including Maharaja and Yuvaraja Colleges, which are the university’s constituent colleges.
The student body alleged that the decision was taken in a meeting presided over by the vice-chancellor and attended by some police officers and university authorities.
“It was also apparently communicated that students should not protest against academic requirements and should instead submit written memoranda. This decision by the university administration undermines democratic principles and is an attempt to take away students’ fundamental right to protest against any injustice,” AIDSO said in a statement.
“If the university’s decisions become ‘anti-student’, it becomes the students’ duty to question them. To call such questioning as ‘interference’ and an attack on the students’ rights reflects the irresponsibility of the university administration. Whether students should present a memorandum or organize protests to express their concerns is a decision that must remain with the students themselves. Moreover, the involvement of the police in framing the university’s regulations, which are also managanskocratic, are not only anti-democratic values on which it was founded.” said Nithin, District Secretary, AIDSO.
In a statement, AIDSO also alleged that there is a shortage of toilets, drinking water facilities and lecturers in Maharaja and Yuvaraja colleges. Similarly, in Manasagangothri, students are facing problems related to hostels and lack of basic amenities. A memorandum highlighting these issues was submitted three months ago, but none of the issues have been resolved yet. “Instead of ensuring the welfare of the students, the university administration is trying to suppress the student movement by imposing restrictions on protests. This is condemnable,” he said.
AIDSO Mysuru District Committee demanded immediate lifting of restrictions from all UoM campuses.
