The Sunday heavy downpour brought the residents of relief from the flying summer heat in the middle districts, many of which have seen a maximum temperature above 40 degrees Celsius in the last few days.
Gusty Winds, accompanied by rain, damaged bananas plants in parts of Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai districts in the region. In the Thiruvaiyar area, trees with banana bundles prepared for harvest were hit. According to the farmers, Banana was brought up on hundreds of acres in Thirvaiyar, Thillaiistan, Perumpuliyur, Kaduvel, Mr. Mr.aiyur, Aachanur, Vadugakudi, Koneirajapuram and other villages and harvesting took place within one month. Heavy winds reduced trees in many villages.
Sources in the Gardening Department stated that the survey to assess the ongoing damage and the report will be submitted to the District Administration per day or two.
Banana crops were also damaged in the blocks of Srkazhi and Sembanarkoval also in the district of Mayiladuuthurai. According to initial estimates, the crop was damaged to about 70 hectares in two blocks. Officials said there was a list of damage.
