A nationwide general strike called by various trade unions against the Union government’s “anti-labour policy” came to a standstill in Kozhikode district on Thursday. All commercial establishments, including hotels, roadside eateries and street vending units, remained closed in Kozhikode city and rural areas.

Union leaders marched to Mananchira to show solidarity with the general strike.

Private buses remained off the roads. Police contingents were deployed at major intersections to ensure public safety. No emergency incidents were reported in the district till late evening.

Police sources said a minor altercation broke out at a government school in Puthiyappa when teachers tried to conduct special classes. The supporters of the strike rushed to the spot and dispersed the students. About 15 teachers also had to leave the place.

A team of volunteers on scooters and several autorickshaw drivers offered free rides to stranded passengers at Kozhikode railway station and other places. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated several inter-district trips.

“As most of the roadside canteens remained closed, the homeless had a tough time,” said TK Babu, a senior worker.

Though almost all petrol stations remained closed, a petrol pump operated by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation in the heart of the city offered relief to many inter-district commuters.
