Whether India has a problem with a stray dog, it certainly has a problem with the sum of dogs. Obtaining this right could be the key to creating any policy, whether it limits dogs or vaccination, effective.
The last national number of vicious dogs is the census in livestock in 2019. In fact, the reports show that the census specific to Delhi was carried out earlier, in 2016. More importantly, the analysis of the census itself raises several questions in 2019.
Take the Tamil Nadu case. In 2019 there were 4.4 lakho stray dogs in the state. In the same year, according to data from the integrated platform for monitoring diseases, Tamil Nadu recorded 8.3 lakh dog bites. The graph below shows the number of bite of dogs and stray dogs in each state in 2019.
