When Millie Bobby Brown first became a sensation through Stranger Things, she was just a pre-teen. Over the years, the actress has experimented with various looks, including swapping her dark brown hair for blonde curls. Recently, the 21-year-old embraced this lighter aesthetic during her press tour for the upcoming Netflix film The Electric State. Now, Millie is speaking out against the harsh criticism and the lack of compassion toward child stars as they grow up.
Addressing the Criticism
In an Instagram video posted on March 3, Millie addressed the negativity surrounding her appearance. She emphasized that the issue extends beyond her, affecting every young woman who grows up in the public eye.
“I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, it seems like people can’t grow with me,” Millie said. Instead, they seem to expect me to remain stagnant, maintaining the same appearance as I did in Season 1 of Stranger Things. But that’s not reality. Now, I’m the target.”
The Stranger Things star didn’t hold back, calling out articles, headlines, and individuals who seemingly thrive on tearing down young women. She read examples of hurtful captions aloud and directly criticized the publications and authors behind them.
“This isn’t journalism—it’s bullying,” she stated. “The fact that adult writers spend time dissecting my face, my body, my choices—it’s concerning. And the fact that some of these articles are written by women? Even worse. We talk about supporting and uplifting young women, but when it comes down to it, it’s easier to tear them down for clicks.”
A Call for Change
Millie urged the media and the public to do better, pointing out the pressure young women face as they navigate adulthood under scrutiny.
“Disillusioned people try to shape a girl becoming a woman on their terms,” she said. “I refuse to apologize for growing up. I refuse to shrink myself to fit unrealistic expectations. I won’t be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself. We’ve become a society where it’s easier to criticize than to compliment.”
She concluded with a heartfelt plea: “This isn’t just about me—it’s about every young girl who deserves to grow up without fear of being torn down simply for existing.”
Growing Up in the Spotlight
Millie has been acting since she was 10 years old, gaining worldwide fame as Eleven in Stranger Things. With the show set to conclude soon, she’s ready to move on from her iconic role.
“I think I’m ready,” she told Women’s Wear Daily in August 2023. “It’s been such a huge part of my life, but it’s like graduating high school. It’s time to go out, flourish, and live my own life.”
In a personal milestone, Millie married Jake Bongiovi in 2024, marking a new chapter in her life.
