Several parts of the Cauvery delta districts received light to moderate rainfall on Monday after heavy overnight rain at several places in the region.
Due to stormy weather under the influence of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, fishermen in most of the coastal areas in the region did not venture into the sea as advised by the Regional Meteorological Center in Chennai. A holiday has been declared for schools in Nagapattinam district and for schools and colleges in Karaikal district in neighboring Puducherry.
Kodiyakarai in Nagapattinam district received the highest rainfall of 12 cm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Monday.
Other major rainfall during the period was at Sembanarkovil (9 cm), Vedaranyam, Thalaignayiru, Kollidam and Sirkali (8 cm each); Tarangambadi and Mayiladuthurai (7 cm each); Tirupoondi and Nannilam (5 cm each); Tiruvarur, Karaikal and Kodavasal (4 cm each); Velankanni, Nagapattinam, Needamangalam (3 cm each); and Manjalaru, Manalmedu, Mannargudi, Pandavaiyar Head, Thirukuvalai and Aduthurai (2 cm each).
Although the rain did not pose a threat to standing rice crops in the region, farmers said continued heavy rain could spell trouble. “There has not been much problem so far, but the fields of young crops are waterlogged as the drainages are not in good condition. Category B, C and D canals are in poor condition and if the rains continue, there may be problems,” said Arupathy P. Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of Cauvery Delta District Farmers’ Associations.
Crops are safe for now
Due to the absence of heavy rain in the upper reaches of the Cauvery delta, there has not been much of a problem so far, said Cauvery Dhanapalan, president of the Tamil Nadu Vivasyigal Sangankalin Kootiyakkam.
If the heavy rain continues for the next few days, farmers, especially those who have grown the thaladi crop, could face problems, he added.
