The US Trade Minister Howard Lutnick urged India to “respond” to the United States, urged the new Delhi to open their markets and stop actions that could “damage” America.
In an interview with News Nation on Sunday, Lutnick focused on India along with several other nations. “We have a lot of countries to remedy as Switzerland, Brazil, is it? It is a problem. India, these are countries that really have to respond correctly to America. Opening your markets, stop taking steps that damage America, and we are with them outside the parties,” he said.
Lutnick has suggested that while India problems will eventually be sorted, but the country must “play the ball” with the US to maintain access to the US consumer market.
“I think they will be solved, but they spend time. And these countries must understand that if you want to sell to an American consumer, do you? You have to play the ball with the President of the United States,” he said.
He also said in an interview that “Banda left the country, but the big ones maybe the big ones you know India will solve it over time.”

Comment of the US Trade Minister follows a recent visit to America’s Indian delegations, led by Minister of Commerce and industrial Minister Piyush Goyal from 22 to 24 September 2025.
The delegation has participated in a number of productive discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral business and investment links between the two countries, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in its statement.
During the visit, Minister Goyal organized key meetings with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, the United States Sales representative and Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador who exchanged views on various aspects of the Business Agreement (BTA).
They agreed to continue the contract to speed up the timely conclusion of the trade agreement, which benefits both countries, added the ministry.
At the beginning of July, Trump’s administration imposed another 25% tariff on Indian goods at the top of the existing 25% of the tariff, thus bringing the total number to 50% to penalize India for the purchase of Russian oil.
