Refinery workers in Haryana’s Panipat on Monday (February 23, 2026) pelted stones at security personnel and vandalized vehicles during a demonstration in support of their various demands.
When the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deployed at the refinery asked the protesters to stay in the designated area, some of them objected and allegedly resorted to stone pelting.
The protesting workers, some of them holding sticks, overturned several vehicles parked at the site and damaged them.
In a tense situation, the police were called.
Panipat Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhupender Singh, who visited the spot to assess the situation, said after receiving information about stone pelting at the refinery, a police force under the command of the Deputy Superintendent of Police was immediately deployed there.
“We have deployed police at the refinery and the situation is calm,” he said.
Asked if the CISF had fired warning shots in the air to disperse the workers, he said the police had received information that one or two shots were fired.
Panipat City Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajbir Singh had earlier said that the workers are protesting in support of their demands raised by their contractor.
Workers’ demands include a fixed eight-hour shift, basic amenities such as toilet and water near the workplace, timely payment of wages and transportation facilities at the workplace.
Later, a meeting was held between the workers’ representatives and the refinery officials.
