The Railways and the state government have informed the Kerala High Court that steps have been taken to implement the long-delayed Sabari railway project.
This follows a petition filed in 2019 by Jijo Joseph, Secretary, Sabari Railway Central Action Council, seeking steps to acquire land for the project, which was proposed between Angamaly and Erumeli, and for its speedy completion.
In its affidavit, the railways said that the Center has decided to unfreeze the railway project. The state government, on its part, has informed the Railway Board of its willingness to share half of the total cost of the project (which works out to ₹1,900 crore) with financial assistance from KIIFB. In addition, the state has already started preparatory work for the acquisition of land.
Besides, the revenue department has been directed to expedite the process of land acquisition as per the approved settlement in Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts.
The department has also been directed to complete the buyout process and speed up the publication of statutory notices, the government order said.
