Steps have been taken to implement spatial planning projects
The District Planning Office (DPO) has initiated steps to implement a set of development projects at the local level based on the master plan, a comprehensive document that outlines guidelines for designing and implementing various development programs. As a first step, the DPO will convene a meeting of all departments in the district on Monday (June 8, 2026) to discuss and decide on projects that can be implemented in local bodies across the district, officials said.
The district plan, a data-driven document running into hundreds of pages, was drawn up across districts towards the end of the tenure of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. In Ernakulam, the document was prepared by compiling the recommendations of 29 sub-committees comprising officials from various sectors. It was designed after a series of meetings and development workshops that took place over almost a year. The document was developed as a plan for the next five years.
“Monday’s meeting is scheduled to discuss several projects to be undertaken by the local bodies in the district in the current financial year. The relevant departments will provide instructions to the local bodies on how to implement the projects and how to get funds,” said a district official.
Apart from officials from various departments, the district panchayat president and district collector will also attend the meeting.
The official said the union can either propose projects already included in the district’s plan or propose new ones during deliberations. The projects to be selected on priority basis could be from key sectors like agriculture, SC/ST development and social justice, the official added.
Another official said the current district plan, the second such document prepared after it was introduced across the state in 2017, will be implemented after taking into account the shortcomings in the implementation of the previous plan. The main objective of the draft guidance document was to prevent duplication of projects planned by ministries and local authorities.
